With the colorful season of fall here in all its glory, you’ve probably at least thought about decorating for the season, if you haven’t done it already. The colors of fall are rich and deep, and they’re a nice contrast to the bright colors that often accompany summer’s heat. One nice thing about decorating for fall is that many of the same designs can transition you right into winter and holiday decorating. Here are some of the top tips for decorating for autumn:
Start at the front door
Remember, you only get one chance to make a first impression on guests, and the front door is the place to do it. Also, this is where you and your family will come in after a long day, and a welcoming entry is so important to make you feel as though you are entering a peaceful haven. Sweep away any blowing leaves (you’ll need to do this a few times per week during peak leaf-dropping season!) and make sure the the front step or porch is clean and tidy. This not only looks nice, but will also reduce the amount of dirt being tracked into the house. Then put up a nice seasonal wreath (pinecones or dried fruit will bring you nicely into November and December) and perhaps some potted mums or other fall flowers. Use the natural beauty of the season and fill a basket with gourds or Indian corn, or put out a pile of pretty orange pumpkins.
Make good use of warmth
Nothing feels so good on a chilly afternoon than snuggling under a soft and fluffy blanket. Go ahead and take out those afghans and quilts, and throw one or two over each chair and couch in your living room. These add a soft texture to everything, and they’re so practical besides. If you are changing your living room pillows, choose something in a “warm” fabric, such as corduroy or velour. Another way to add warmth is to burn candles. Use scented or unscented, and choose candles in a variety of sizes and heights.
Integrate fall colors
Some of the classic colors of fall include cranberry, hunter green, burgundy, gold, burnt orange, brown and deep plum. You can use two or three of these together in a room, or you can pair them with lighter colors, if you desire. Sprinkle hints of your target color or colors throughout a room, on pillows, blankets, wall hangings, towels, potholders, flowers and vases. Use natural elements when possible: Frame pressed fall leaves, for example, or set out a bowl of pinecones and cranberries.
Appeal to the senses of smell and taste
One of the best things about fall is the food! From fresh-picked apples to deep-dish pies to the hearty roasts and stews that take the chill out of cold days, many of us can think of several comfort foods of fall. Since cooking can heat up the kitchen and dining room, this is a great time to bake cookies, simmer soup and roast a whole chicken. If you’re not cooking anything in particular but would like a natural fragrance, try simmering some orange peels, cinnamon sticks, apple cores and a few cloves in a pan of water on the stove.
Celebrate the holidays
Some decorations are only put out for a small period of time, and this is a great way to observe the special days and traditions that come along each fall. Go ahead and put out carved jack o’lanterns or spooky ghost decorations if you enjoy it. A few turkey decorations are great for the last half of November, and when you put them away, it will be time to bring out the winter holiday decorations of your choice.
Decorating for the seasons is about more than just pulling out holiday decorations. It’s important to consider texture, smell, taste and temperature, as well. Decorating creates a feeling of welcome for your family and guests alike, so invest in a few new items this fall as you feather your nest.
