Common Custom Closet Materials

One of the common questions we hear as professional closet installers in Connecticut is, “what materials do you use?” There are several types of building materials commonly used in custom closets, and we have chosen our favorites based on longevity, value and appearance. Here are some common types of materials used in closets, both professionally designed and DIY.

Wood Closets

Hardwoods can be used to build beautiful custom closets. These look elegant and are able to be cut to fit into non-traditional spaces. Wood is sturdy and strong, and in most cases it will withstand the test of time. Hardwoods are also very heavy, which is not an issue if you are hiring a company to build your closet for you. Wood can be quite expensive, so keep this in mind if you are on a budget. Also, if you have any issues with humidity or moisture in the room where you plan to have your closet installed, wood might not be the best option.

Wire Closets

A trip to any do-it-yourself home store will show you quite a few wire closet configurations. These are good for the DIYer, mainly because the wire components snap together and are easy to install. They are also relatively inexpensive, making them a decent choice for someone on a tight budget. Wire closets are not the strongest option, though; overloading the shelves is likely to result in buckling, bending and even wall damage if the screws are pulled loose. They are also not very customizable. You are limited to the stock available and wire shelves can’t simply be trimmed to fit a smaller space.

Melamine Closets

At Hang It Up Closets, we use MDF covered in melamine. The shelves are sturdy and strong, and they’re also resistant to moisture, bending, warping, UV rays, staining and pretty much anything else you can throw at them. In addition, our products are fully customizable and come in a wide range of colors, finishes and styles. These generally need to be created and installed by a professional, which adds to the cost somewhat. Keep in mind, however, that not only do melamine closets increase the value of your home, but they also stand up to decades of use, so you will surely get your money’s worth
